Lifeguard Training USA

Nationwide lifeguard certification, CPR and first aid training for pools, waterfronts, camps and municipal aquatics programs.

Lifeguard Training USA runs nationally recognized lifeguard certification classes from $195. Courses cover water rescue, spinal management, CPR for the professional rescuer, AED use and first aid. Most candidates certify in two to three days and the credential is valid for two years.

What is a lifeguard certification course?

A lifeguard certification course is a training program that teaches water rescue, surveillance, CPR for the professional rescuer, and first aid. Candidates must pass a swim screening, written exam, and hands-on rescue skills test. A successful candidate receives a nationally recognized certificate valid for two years.

Lifeguarding is a professional safety role, not a summer job with a whistle. The course exists because drowning is fast, silent, and often invisible to an untrained eye. Our program trains candidates to scan a zone properly, recognize a distressed swimmer within seconds, enter the water safely, and deliver care from the moment of rescue until emergency medical services arrive.

Training combines classroom instruction, pool sessions, and scenario drills. Candidates practice with rescue tubes, backboards, bag valve masks, and automated external defibrillators. Instructors assess each skill individually, so nobody passes the course by watching from the deck.

Which lifeguard courses does Lifeguard Training USA offer?

We run four core programs: a full lifeguard certification class, a CPR and AED course for professional rescuers, a first aid course, and a recertification course for guards whose credentials are expiring. Facilities can also book private on-site sessions for an entire staff team.

How long does it take to become a certified lifeguard?

Most candidates finish lifeguard certification in two to three days, typically 22 to 26 instructional hours. Blended options let students complete roughly seven hours of coursework online, then attend one or two in-water sessions. Recertification for current guards usually takes a single day.

The schedule matters because facilities hire on deadlines. A pool opening Memorial Day weekend needs guards certified before the gates open, not two weeks after. We publish class dates well ahead of the summer hiring season and add sessions in spring when demand peaks.

Typical course length by program
Program Format Hours Certificate validity
Lifeguard certification In person or blended 22 to 26 2 years
Lifeguard recertification In person 6 to 8 2 years
CPR and AED for professional rescuers In person or blended 4 to 5 2 years
First aid In person or blended 4 2 years

What are the prerequisites for lifeguard training?

Candidates must be at least 15 years old on the final day of class and pass a pre-course swim screening. The screening includes a continuous 300 yard swim, a two minute tread using legs only, and a timed brick retrieval from the deep end within one minute and forty seconds.

  • Age. Fifteen by the last scheduled class day. Bring photo identification.
  • 300 yard continuous swim. Front crawl or breaststroke, goggles permitted, no resting on the wall.
  • Two minute tread. Legs only, hands under the armpits, head above water the entire time.
  • Timed brick event. Swim 20 yards, surface dive to retrieve a 10 pound brick, return on your back holding the brick with both hands, and exit without a ladder.
  • Attendance. Full attendance is required. There is no partial credit for a missed session.

Candidates who cannot yet pass the screening are not turned away permanently. We tell them exactly which element to train and invite them back to a later class date. Most people who fail the brick event pass it on a second attempt after two weeks of practice.

How much does lifeguard certification cost?

A full lifeguard certification class starts at $195 per candidate, which covers instruction, skills testing, the digital certificate, and use of rescue equipment during training. Group rates apply for facilities enrolling six or more staff members in the same session.

The price is flat. There is no separate charge for the CPR component, the first aid component, or the certificate itself, because those are part of the same credential a facility will ask to see on your first day. Facilities booking a private on-site course receive a single quote that covers instructor travel and equipment.

Where can I take a lifeguard class in the United States?

We schedule classes nationwide at partner pools, municipal aquatic centers, universities, and private facilities. If no public class is running near you, we can bring an instructor to your site once a group of six or more candidates is confirmed.

Coverage is genuinely national rather than a single region with a wide claim. Availability changes by season: coastal and Sun Belt states run classes year round, while northern states cluster in the spring hiring window. Contact us with your zip code and target date and we will confirm the nearest option.

How do facilities hire certified lifeguards?

Facilities can either certify their own staff through our classes or contract guards directly through our staffing service. Contracted guards arrive with current certification, documented in-service training, and liability coverage, which removes the recruiting and credential tracking burden from the operator.

Aquatic operators face a real staffing shortage. Many pools reduce hours or close sections not because demand is low but because they cannot field enough certified guards. Both routes solve that: train the people you already employ, or bring in guards who are ready to work. Read more on Hire a Lifeguard.

Frequently asked questions

How much does lifeguard certification cost?

A full lifeguard certification class starts at $195 per candidate. That price includes instruction, skills testing, rescue equipment use during training, and the digital certificate. Facilities enrolling six or more staff in one session qualify for a group rate.

How long is a lifeguard certification valid?

A lifeguard certification issued through our program is valid for two years from the date of the final skills test. Guards should book a recertification class before the expiry date, because an expired credential requires the full course again.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer for lifeguard certification?

You need competence rather than speed. The lifeguard certification screening asks for a continuous 300 yard swim, a two minute leg only tread, and a timed brick retrieval. Candidates who train specifically for those three events usually pass.

Can I complete lifeguard certification online?

Only partly. The knowledge portion of lifeguard certification can be completed online in a blended format, but every candidate must attend in-water sessions and pass hands-on rescue skills in person. Any provider offering a fully online credential is not issuing a usable certificate.

What is the minimum age for lifeguard certification?

Candidates must be at least 15 years old on the final day of the class. There is no upper age limit for lifeguard certification, and we regularly certify adults returning to aquatics after years away from the profession.
